Grassroots reading room

Stories in motion across town

Lucis Mobile Library operates as a free, open-door vehicle delivering pre-loved literature straight to neighborhood sidewalks and community parks.

How we began

Books belonging to everyone

The project started with a retired delivery vehicle and several crates of paperbacks gathered from neighborhood shelves. We recognized that while traditional institutions serve readers well, distance and rigid schedules often keep casual readers from borrowing.

By loading sturdy wooden boxes with well-kept fiction, poetry, and youth titles, we built a roving browsing space that parks curbside. Every title circulates without borrower cards or due dates, sustained entirely by reciprocal goodwill.

Curbside reader

Finding a crate of paperbacks at the edge of our local park gave our weekends a shared ritual built entirely on unconditional trust.

Borrowing carries no checkout cards, due dates, or overdue fees. Readers keep volumes for as long as needed and return or pass them forward freely.

Our traveling shelves navigate directly into residential courtyards and open fields where brick-and-mortar branches are beyond convenient walking distance.

Every volume in circulation is donated by residents, inspected for sturdy condition, and hand-stamped by local volunteers before hitting the street.
